Mamman’s music embodies a sense of intimacy, echoing the presence of a solo artist in the room with the listener. Both Mamman Sani and Tropikal Camel draw from rich and diverse cultural backgrounds, creating a dialogue of cultural exchange and mutual respect. Forming a “living monument” to the end of violence, this performance includes a public procession, a burial of weapons (both literal and metaphorical), and a series of eulogies about war, peace, and democracy. Bringing together funerary tradition, military ritual, and personal testimony, Bury Our Weapons, Not Our Bodies! deepens the artist’s investigations of memory and national identity.A series of masks designed for the performance are in the center of the visual identity. They show human faces, but also grotesque masks, in the form of a shield. The starting point of the design was the appearance of the gas mask—a tool of protection and then it expanded into different forms. This organization reflects the polyphonic complexity, rich nuance, and ambivalence that the work casts into visuals and underscores that there is no simple answer. The book includes an interview with the artist and contributions by Sami Berdugo, Christina von Braun, Michael Brenner, Max Czollek, and others. It is published on occasion of the exhibition Yael Bartana—Redemption Now at the Jewish Museum Berlin. Relating to the tradition of counting the 49 days between the two spring holidays Pessach and Shavu’ot, the series consists of different weekly events, in various formats. Expanding the understanding of Jewish traditions as contemporary, experimental Dramaturgies, the program includes performances, a talk, a concert, a dinner and several city walks. The first half of the book is in Black and White, showing us a ‘whitened world’, as if the world had been overtaken by ice, the sculptures appear as the wreckage of civilization made of abandoned and broken objects, as if after a cataclysmic event of apocalyptic dimensions. The second part of the book is in color, with the curatorial texts in the middle of the edition. In certain regions in Africa, especially in Tanzania and Nigeria, albinos are persecuted because of the superstition that they are bewitched. In some cultures in West Africa, albinos’ eyes, which are very sensitive to sunlight, are believed to have prophetic abilities and extrasensory perception.
